JDF Guide for Managers JDF Roadmap MIS Guide for Managers
OverviewDeborah Hutcheson (Agfa) in an interview on WhatTheyThink coined the phrase "JDF by PowerPoint". Deborah suggested that we have been talking about JDF and describing it in PowerPoint slides and it is now time to see it live and hands-on. Ryerson University and CIP4 wholeheartedly agree with Deborah's viewpoint and invite you to join us for a 1-day program that covers all aspects of process automation using JDF technology and workflows.JDF is intended to enable the entire industry, including media, design, prepress, finishing, digital presses and e-commerce solutions to work with different workflows through a common, standardized file format. Come to this JDF Education event to understand the benefits and challenges of implementing JDF in your shop. In the morning program meet with Executive Director of CIP4 - James Harvey and Mark Wilton, CIP4 Education and Marketing Officer. Understand the concepts and basics of JDF and the underlying XML language. Explore JDF certified systems, JDF training courses and hear about implementation of JDF at Ampersand Printing in Guelph, Ontario. In the afternoon wander between the different hands-on labs where instructors will allow you to open and examine a JDF file, send a JDF file from Acrobat to Dalim Mistral or from Kodak Preps to Agfa Apogee Prepress. Take a file from prepress and create automated cutting instructions in Compucut, or send a job to our Xerox Docucolor 7000 and monitor the JMF response. See it, do it, feel the excitement of live JDF...This event was held in 2007 and 2008 and is back by popular demand in 2010. There is limited capacity, so book early. The event is hosted by the CIP4 Education and Marketing Committee and Ryerson's School of Graphic Communications Management with support from Canada's MITACS organization.Financial Support from MITACSThe Canadian Government MITACS Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program supports scientific events in areas of significant industrial, economic or social impact for Canada. MITACS has provided assistance for this networking and training event as it falls within the provincial priority areas of digital media, and information and communications technology.
Who should attend
This event is designed for small and medium-size printers, prepress users, workflow consultants, middle managers, senior management and technology implementers. Previous events were attended by Rogers Publishing, Transcontinental, City of Toronto, Royal Bank of Canada, Canon, etc.
Program, Thursday, June 178.00 am Registration, Coffee, Pastries
8.30 am Welcome and Introduction, Michael Makin, President & CEO, Printing Industries of America
8.45 - 9.15 am Introducing JDF and CIP4 - Practical Considerations for Users. James Harvey, Executive Director, CIP4 Organization Download PresentationLooking for ways to streamline production, save on labor and waste, improve throughput and connect with your customers? Jim introduces the role of the CIP4 Organization and provides an overview to JDF technology. This presentation addresses the needs of small and medium-sized printers and describes CIPPI award-winning examples of JDF implementation.9.15 – 10.00 am Understanding JDF Product Certification. Dr Mark Bohan, VP, Technology and Research, Printing Industries of America Download PresentationNo single device is likely to implement all that the JDF specification provides for, e.g. a RIP need not facilitate JDF preflighting, a stitcher doesn't need to handle image data. To specify exactly what individual classes of devices need to do with JDF, CIP4 introduced specifications that enable JDF certification for individual classes of device. Find out how it is done, and what it means for you.
10.00 - 10.15 am Coffee Break
10.15 - 11.00 am JDF and XML - Looking Inside a JDF File. Dr Abhay Sharma, Ryerson University Download PresentationJDF is intended to enable the entire industry to work with different workflows through a common file format. But what does a JDF look like? This session cracks open a JDF file and explores the inner workings of XML. We show that a JDF file shares the same technology as the iPhone, Microsoft Word, Mac OS and many, many other modern technologies.11.00 - 11.45 am JDF and the Adobe PDF Print Engine - How are they Related? Tony Karg, Senior Director of Busines Development & Marketing, Graphic Systems, FUJIFILM CanadaJDF can be used with PDF files to enable standards-based workflow automation for improved productivity. The Adobe Print Engine 2 streamlines print production by utilizing a single workflow for all job types — offset, short-run digital, and VDP. OEM customers use the Print Engine to combine the strengths of PDF for content definition with the power of JDF for workflow automation.11.45 – 12.30 pm Case Study from Ampersand Printing, Guelph, Ontario, Gary Marron, CEO, HIFLEX Corp. NA Download PresentationThe two time CIP4 CIPPI award winner and pioneer of JDF automation, Ampersand Printing will be the focus of this discussion. The Canadian printer, located in Guelph, ON, has achieved a seamless JDF workflow that moves jobs through every department of their facility. Learn how Ampersand saved 30 minutes in prepress per job, reduced make-ready on press to an average of 16 minutes, and shortened their post press make-ready by 25 minutes. These are just a few of the benefits that integration and automation have facilitated. See how Ampersand Printing was able to achieve these amazing improvements and see how you can reproduce their results in your own print facility.12.30 pm - 1.30 pm Lunch1.30 - 4.30 pm Hands-On Workshops JDF by PowerPoint !!Each session in the afternoon lasts 1 hour. The program is repeated hourly at 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm, and 3.30 pm. Attendees are free to choose sessions that best match their interests and core business needs. Automation Solutions Network, June 15 -16, 2010The Automation Solutions Network meeting will take place over 2 days immediately prior to the JDF Education Event. Automation Solutions Network was formerly known as the JDF User Group. It has established itself as the premiere event to exchange ideas and solutions for JDF workflows. The Automation Solutions Network focuses on the development and practical implementation of JDF-enabled systems and cross-vendor implementations. The network welcomes a wide range of users of JDF-enabled systems as well as the suppliers of those systems.
As one participant commented, “I had hit a brick wall. The information I have gained here allows me to move the integration forward, I have the proof it is being done!”
“Implementing process automation, even with JDF, requires active participation by the printer’s staff,” said James Harvey, Executive Director of CIP4. “Different vendors have different philosophies for how they are implementing process automation, and printers may find themselves acting as project managers to work out issues that may arise when multiple systems are integrated. The group fills a huge void in the industry by providing a forum where users can learn from each other, exchange ideas, and present issues to the vendor community. In this format, they are sure to get answers.”
“I am very excited about this group, as it will give printers a practical guide to implementation based on best practices and experiences in the industry,” said Dr. Mark Bohan, Printing Industries of America Vice President, Technology and Research. “It has the support of the printer and supplier community, as well as CIP4, and is an outstanding opportunity to expand the scope of JDF implementation and true cross-vendor implementation.”
